Parents and teachers, you can make your own mad libs card game with our easy, step-by-step instructions. The directions here will help your kids create wacky, imaginative stories. For extra fun, use the four story starters we’ve included on the printable version. Kids can play again and again because the results will be different every time! Adults can use these directions for loads of fun, too! Print off Mad Lib Cards, Instructions, and Story Starters in pdf format1. Have kids make their own word cards on a set of 100 3” x 5” index cards. On the front of each card, direct students to write the part of speech. On the back, ask them to write their choice of word. Note: For best results, encourage kids to write specific, interesting words instead of general words. For instance, instead of writing person, they should write pilot, explorer, hospital patient, or circus clown. Adults can help make the cards, especially with younger learners. 2. Use these categories and labels: CN Common nouns (20) PN - P Proper noun, name of a person (10) PN - PL Proper noun, name of a place (10) V Past tense verbs (20) ADJ Adjectives (20) ADV Adverbs (20) GROUP GAMES #1 – Telling Tall Tales (For any number of players)Shuffle all the cards together. Deal each player 6 cards at random. The first player starts telling a story using one of his words. He places the word he uses on the table. The player on his left must add to the story using one of his cards. He also places the used card on the table. Play continues with all players using their word cards, discarding cards as they use them. The last player who is able to add to the story wins the round. Ready for the next really cool mad libs card game! #2 - A Good Deal of Fun (For groups of 3-6 players)Shuffle all the cards together. Deal each player 6 cards at random. The first player to create a sentence or two using all 6 words of his/her words wins the round. Note: The sentences can be conveyed in writing or orally. #3 – Dealing the Parts of Speech (For groups of 3-6 players)Keep each type of word in its own pile. Shuffle the cards and place them with the word side down. Each player draws one card from each pile. The first player to create a sentence or two using all of his/her words wins the round. Note: The sentences can be conveyed in writing or orally. For young learners, use only the common nouns, verbs, and adjectives. #4 – Silly Story Starters (For 3-4 players)Keep each type of word in its own pile. Shuffle the cards and place them with the word side down. Chose one of our story-starters included below. Select one player to read the story, another player to write the words in the blanks, and other players to pick cards from the decks as needed. Players complete the story by drawing cards at random from each pile. After the group completes the story-starter, ask each player to write his/her own ending to the story. #5 – Even Sillier Story Starters (For 3-4 players)Play this mad libs card game like the one above except give each player a different story starter. All the players use the same set of words in a different story! Ask each player to write his own ending to his story and share it with the group. GAMES FOR ONE Games #2, 3, and 4 also make great “solitaire” activities! Encourage your child to complete a crazy story or two, illustrate it and share it with his/her family. GAMES FOR ADULTS This mad libs card game works well for family groups and adult parties. Use age-appropriate words and get ready for a LOT of LAUGHS!
