Vacation Bible School Games

cartoony kids raising their hands

Here's one of the best-ever vacation Bible school games! Why? Because kids must race to look up important verses. To do well in this game, kids must know how to locate books of the Bible -- QUICKLY!

It's a lot of fun for those who are competing and those who are watching.

Sword Drills

Variation 1

For this game, each player competes individually. This game is most successful when all the players are at about the same level of competency in locating scripture references.

1. Make a list of several important Bible verses and their references in advance for the leader to use.

2. To play, make sure each player has a Bible.

3. The leader calls out a scripture reference. For example, say “Psalms 100:1.”

4. Players race to be the first to find the verse. When a player finds the verse, he immediately reads it aloud.

5. The leader confirms if it is the correct verse. If it is, the player earns a point. If it is not the right verse, the other players continue looking for the verse and can begin reading it if they find it.

6. Play several rounds. The winner is the person with the most points at the end of playing time.

Variation #2

Bible

For this game, arrange players in pairs or small teams to play the Sword Drill game in reverse.

1. Make a list of several important Bible verses and their references in advance for the leader to use.

2. To play, make sure each team has a Bible.

3. The leader reads a well-known scripture verse, or part of a familiar verse.

4. Players on each team work together to find the reference, trying to find it before other teams. When a team thinks they have the reference, they call it out.

5. The leader confirms if it is the correct reference. If it is, the team earns a point. If it is not the right verse, the other players continue looking for the verse and can call out the reference if they find it.

6. Play several rounds. The winning team is the one with the most points at the end of playing time.
